Immaculate Coffee

Inmaculada

We are always keeping our ears perked {pun intended} for the latest buzz {yes, this one, too :) } on coffee.  Recently you may have heard about Intelligentsia’s rare blend called Café Inmaculada. Café Inmaculada, or translated literally as immaculate coffee, is a special opportunity to try something so pure and unique. Through their efforts, they have brought together a trio of magnificent coffee varieties. These three cultivars have their own story that could not be told any better than Intelligentsia themselves:

“Sudan Rume- A legendary coffee variety that originated on the Boma Plateau, located in southeastern Sudan near to the
Ethiopian border. This area belongs to a region considered to be the birthplace of the Arabica species. Sudan
Rume has long been used by plant breeders as a source of ‘quality’ genes, but is rarely planted because it doesn’t
produce large yields.”

“Laurina- Laurina, a.k.a. Bourbon Pointu, comes from Réunion Island just off the coast of Madagascar. It is the direct descendent of the trees responsible for seeding most of Latin America, and was all but forgotten for most of the 20th century. Laurina is thought to be an early mutation from the Typica variety and is now considered the ‘original’ Bourbon. It has the distinction of being extremely low in caffeine.”

“Maragesha- This is a spontaneous wild cross of Maragogype and Geisha that occurred in the Santuario farm outside of Popayán, where trees of the two varieties were growing next to one another. It does not exist anywhere else, and this lot is the first to have ever been harvested.

It is amazing to read about the sheer effort that endured in order to make a creation like this happen. The more I learn about this immaculate coffee, the more I learn about the unique origins of these beans. For example, the Maragogype coffee beans are also know as “elephant  beans” for their sheer size in comparison to other beans. (It is the one on the left below.)

Unfortunately this coffee has sold out but but I would love to hear from anyone who has had the chance to try it or even knows someone who has tried even one of these coffee blends. Have you ever gone outside your coffee comfort zone and tried something totally different?

Take Coffee To The Next Level

With all of this cold weather, I find myself drinking more coffee than usual to help stay warm. These added cups of coffee not only have me running on low supply but curious to try something new and different. With all of my free time (ha!  :-) ) I hopped on the internet and found a few promising leads.

coffee cupping

First, I came across cupping events. Coffee “cupping” is a process that helps the taster to evaluate the coffee. This procedure involves sniffing, loudly slurping, and sometimes spitting out the coffee to enhance the senses. Some of the characteristics described in this process are body, sweetness, acidity, flavor, and aftertaste {Check out our Coffee 101 Series for these definitions}. Some people are so well acquainted with coffee and flavors that they are able to distinguish the origins of the beans.

This then led me to a group called the Specialty Coffee Association of America. They hold events such as a specialty coffee symposium and expo in Seattle, Washington and a barista/brewers competition in Los Angeles, California.

Are you tired of being in the same old coffee routine? See if there is a local cupping event near you or a coffee symposium you could attend.  Try something new and be sure to tell us about it!

National Wear Red Day

Help us at Coffee Rocket celebrate Heart Month by wearing red on February 7th, the National Wear Red Day, to help bring awareness to heart disease in women.

National Go Red Day (2)

Heart Disease is something that everyone wants to avoid so here are some simple ways that we can actively practice this month!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so let’s start there. If you are like me, you immediately think of Cheerios as a great place to start. The better your cholesterol, the less stress on your heart! Plus Cheerios go great with a cup of coffee in the morning. And yes coffee (filtered is better than unfiltered) is also great for heart health! Coffee has been found to reduce your chances for an irregular heartbeat, heart disease, stroke, and improved blood flow in small blood vessels. You can even substitute your creamer, half and half, or whatever else you use in your coffee for soy milk (another heart healthy item).

Some other super heart healthy foods are:

  • Oatmeal
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, and pistachios
  • Fish such as salmon and tuna
  • And just to reduce the amount of salt you use.

So what are you waiting for? Get up and get active! Get a good nights sleep! Eat fruits and veggies! And relax with a nice cup of tea before bed! You only get one heart, so lets put on some red and give our hearts something to beat about. Show us what you are doing for Heart Month on Facebook or Twitter and maybe you could be the customer of the month too!

Why Isn’t My Coffee Working?!

Some days my coffee gives me the boost I need and some days it’s like I haven’t had a cup all day!  Have you ever felt like the coffee you just drank wasn’t working? Of course we had to investigate and found that our bodies are naturally caffeinated at certain times of the day.  Therefore, coffee will have diminished results if drank during these periods of times.

coffee tired

So when is the best time to drink caffeine? It varies from person to person based on their routines, but on average there are about three times a day that the body is naturally caffeinated. In between these times also comes a drop in energy and is the perfect time for a coffee if you are feeling flat or tired. If you want your coffee or tea to give you a boost then make sure you have a cup between these times of the day:

  • 8:00-9:00 AM
  • 12:00-1:00 PM
  • 5:30-6:30 PM

So grab your favorite coffee with us at Coffee Rocket and be better prepared to face the busy day…but you might want to avoid drinking that coffee too late after 6:30 PM if you don’t want to be up all night.  Happy caffeinating! :)
